How To Get Started (or Recommit) With Weight Loss- The Blueprint

If you’re reading this, chances are, you came as a result of watching my Instagram Reel.

Firstly, thank you so much for being in this space with me. I appreciate you!

Secondly, just so you can get a quick idea of who I am; My name is Marie and I’m a wife and mom of three, unique and wonderful kids. I’m also a health coach with 7 years of experience with fitness, wellness, and nutrition.

Lastly, let’s get right into this post because personally, I hate reading several paragraphs before I finally get into the good stuff, too. 😭

The Only Things You Need To Get Started On Your Journey

1. A Meaningful Why

When I recommitted to my journey in January of this year, I remember sitting down at my kitchen table and getting serious with myself.

I knew I wanted to lose weight.

But, for the first time in a while, I wanted the habits that are required to lose weight, to actually stick this time.

I wanted it to be a lifestyle, and not something I do just to drop a jean size.

So, I wrote down what I wanted to achieve and the benefits I wanted to reap.

Things such as, “I want more energy to be able to keep up with my kids.”

“I don’t want to develop the illnesses that run in my family, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.”

I desire to add years to my life, and not the opposite.”

It’s important that you develop a why that is meaningful enough to keep you going forward, especially on the days you are unmotivated or disappointed.

Think about the issues that bother you or the goals you always dream of, write them down, and revisit it extremely often to keep yourself on track.

2. SMART Goals

After you’ve developed a strong why, it’s time to write down your goals and break them down into goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound.

Unfortunately, it is not enough to say “I want to lose 50 pounds.” and leave it at that.

That is a sure-fire way to make you feel overwhelmed and defeated before you even start.

Or, maybe you do start, but the slow progress is enough to make you throw in the towel and never reach your goal.

Taking the time to sit down and write down your SMART goals will help you feel like, “I can actually do this.”

You do not want to skip this step. It may be tedious, but it makes a world of a difference in your success rate. Trust me on this one.

Your SMART goals are also ones you should revisit very often.

3. Support/ Accountability

At the beginning of my recommitment to health, I didn’t heavily rely on others in order to stick to my journey.

However, I am extremely grateful for the support, especially when it was really needed.

On the days I was discouraged about my weight loss progress or unmotivated, it was nice to receive advice and words of encouragement from like-minded women.

They even helped me think outside of the box by pointing out potential causes of my concerns, that I probably wouldn’t have thought about until much later.

Joining an online support/accountability group isn’t mandatory, but if you have a history of being inconsistent with your journey, I lovingly recommend it.

4. Planning Is The Lifeline

There is so much truth behind the popular saying, “A goal without a plan is only a dream.

Weight loss, a healthy lifestyle, or whichever term you prefer to use, requires effort, time, dedication, and you guessed it- planning.

What makes me highly successful with staying on track with my goals is planning my week ahead of time.

Every Sunday, I plan out what meals I’m going to eat to hit my protein goal, my workouts, how many days per week I’m going to exercise, etc.

If you want to stay on track with your weekly routine, it’s ideal to know what you want and need in order for it to be a success.

5. Don’t Be Hard On Yourself

If I could go back to my 24-year-old self, I would tell her to release all the pressure she has on herself to get things “just right.”

I would tell her that it’s okay to struggle and mess up, because the “mess ups” are what will lead her to so much learning and growth.

I would remind her that “mess ups” don’t mean she’s a failure or that she will never stop yo-yo dieting and binge eating.

I would remind her that “doing things just right” doesn’t exist, and to always give herself grace.

Oh, how I wish I could go back and squeeze her, lovingly.

The truth is, there were several years I felt defeated, unmotivated, discouraged, disgusted, and DONE!

But, again, it’s all a part of the journey.

If you aren’t where you desire to be right now, or if you are tired from “falling off”, please re-read the words to past me.

Remind yourself of those words when it’s needed most!

That’s a wrap, folks

Contrary of belief, you don’t need several things in order to start taking care of yourself.

What matters most is your desire to never quit!

You have to be so focused on what you truly want that you will continue working towards it.

Don’t be hard on yourself, plan ahead, and keep your why in mind!

Wishing you so much success,

-Marie
